If you haven’t filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) yet, there’s good news. The Income Tax Department has officially extended the deadline for filing ITRs that were originally due on or before July 31, 2025. The new due date is now September 15, 2025.

WHY HAS THE ITR FILING DEADLINE BEEN EXTENDED?
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) made this decision after delays in issuing the new ITR forms and the necessary tools (utilities) required for filing. These forms have gone through several changes this year, and the tax department needed more time to prepare the systems and make them ready for public use.

The IT Department wrote on X, “This extension will provide more time due to significant revisions in ITR forms, system development needs, and TDS credit reflections. This ensures a smoother and more accurate filing experience for everyone. Formal notification will follow.”

According to the CBDT, the ITR forms for this year have been restructured and updated to make things easier for taxpayers. The changes aim to simplify the filing process, improve transparency and help taxpayers report their income more accurately.

Because of these changes, more time was needed to test and release the updated system. Also, tax deducted at source (TDS) details – which are important while filing – only start showing up in early June, leaving little time for accurate filing without an extension.
