The move is aimed at helping users, especially those in remote or less connected areas, stay updated with important banking and financial updates in a simple and easy manner.
The new WhatsApp channel is a part of the RBI’s ongoing public awareness programme called ‘RBI Kehta Hai’ (RBI Says). The programme already shares important information through SMS, television ads, newspapers, and digital platforms.
With the addition of WhatsApp, the RBI hopes to reach even more people using one of the most popular messaging apps in the country.
WHY HAS RBI LAUNCHED A WHATSAPP CHANNEL?
The RBI said that the goal of the WhatsApp channel is to provide verified and timely information about banking, digital safety, and other important topics directly to users. This is especially useful at a time when fake news and frauds often circulate on social media. The RBI hopes the WhatsApp channel will help clear confusion and build public trust by sharing official information in a direct and simple way.
In its press release dated April 4, the RBI said, “Through the verified ‘Reserve Bank of India’ account on WhatsApp, we aim to make important financial information more accessible to everyone, regardless of their geographical location.”
